Electrical Device Power Management

With the proliferation of electronic devices deployed in the military, it is increasingly difficult to maintain adequate inventories of batteries and power units required for each device’s operation. Further, the Warfighter must carry an increasing number of different power units into the field to operate critical electronic devices. Indy Power Systems has developed a mechanism that can use any power source, or any number of power sources, to power any electrical device. The mechanism, referred to as the Multi-FlexÔ, can operate in a bi-directional fashion so that power can be distributed to either a load (powering a device) or pulled from a source (generation/recharge). The Multi-FlexÔ could reduce the number of power units deployed in the field and the

Warfighter would have more flexibility in operations.

The practical impact of the Multi-FlexÔ will be to enable the Warfighter to use any battery or power source at hand to power any device desired. For example, power from a locomotive, golf cart, wheel chair or scooter battery could be used to power any device deployed. TheMulti-FlexÔ is completely scalable so that it can work with the smallest electrical device up to the largest, including the electric power grid. TheMulti-FlexÔ corrects voltages so the voltage is not a concern as long as the power is available. The microprocessor within the

Multi-FlexÔ can be programmed to work with any existing power unit, and a quick software download can configure theMulti-FlexÔ to work with new power unit profiles as desired.

Battery and Cell Management

Indy Power Systems can manage individual battery cells in a real time and contemporaneous method, allowing precise management of Li-ion and Pb-A battery packs and cells within those packs. The Indy Power Systems methodology can greatly minimize or eliminate thermal events within battery packs and can lengthen the life of batteries.

Microgrid Management

TheMulti-FlexÔ can also manage and blend power from multiple power sources such as wind, solar, batteries, fuel cells, and combustion driven generators for electric power grid applications. TheMulti-FlexÔ is efficient and can be programmed for remote power generation, emergency backup, peak power shaving, and load balancing. TheMulti-FlexÔ can optimize and blend multiple power units, extending their useful lives.
